1 of 8
Giants pretty happy with their move from 12th to 8th!
Let’s look at the middle of the ladder with just four games left in the season.
8th: GWS Giants, 34 points, 96.6%
9th: Essendon, 32 points, 103.4%
10th: Richmond, 32 points, 98.2%
11th: Fremantle, 32 points, 90.3%
12th: St Kilda, 32 points, 86.9%
Pretty happy in the winner’s camp.
Summed up in one word.
Essendon Bombers 4.3, 6.4, 6.8, 7.11 (53)
GWS Giants 2.4, 3.6, 7.10, 9.12 (66)
Leading disposals: Lachie Whitfield (36), Tom Green (29), Dyson Heppell (28), Harry Perryman (25), Jordan Ridley (25), Josh Kelly (23)
Team stats (Bombers-Giants): Disposals 314-376, inside-50s 43-43, free kicks 22-21, hitouts 33-21, clearances 27-30, uncontested possessions 196-254, marks 89-139, contested marks 10-18, tackles 47-40.
The Bombers led for more than 56 minutes before the Giants found the lead in the third term and ran away with a 13-point win. After half-time, the Bombers kicked just 1.7 to the Giants’ 6.6, going missing for large parts of the game. The contest was relatively even in the first half, despite the Bombers leading by 16 points, but the Giants improved their efficiency going forward and dominated the territory game to overcome the Bombers.
They leap into eighth spot and in the process knock the Bombers out of the top eight. It’s the second time the Giants have beaten the Bombers this year.
Brent Daniels has just dribbled a stoppage goal through an open goal square to put his side up by 14 points!
There’s only 1.50 min left on the clock, so that’s probably the game!
Bombers 7.10 (52), Giants 9.12 (66)
Four straight behinds - two to Essendon and two to the Giants - have left the game in the balance with just over five minutes on the clock.
Devon Smith has missed both of Essendon’s chances; first a set shot after Zach Merrett intercepted a turnover in his front half and hit up the former Giants, and the second a difficult snap shot.
Mumford is having a big last term, but has just given away another block in a ruck contest against Draper.
Bombers 7.10 (52), Giants 8.12 (60)
A goal each way in this final term sees the Bombers trail by eight points.
Sam Reid got on the end of a speculative kick to the top of the goal square by Jesse Hogan and stretched the Giants’ three-quarter-time lead to 14 points, but Nik Cox has responded to keep his side in the hunt.
It’s a fierce contest, but at the moment, the big difference is the Giants have taken the big contested mark (17-8) when it counts.
Sam Draper is getting worked over too by Mumford; he’s only had nine touches and hasn’t taken a mark.
Bombers 7.8 (50), Giants 8.10 (58)
Essendon Bombers 4.3, 6.4, 6.8 (44)
GWS Giants 2.4, 3.6, 7.10 (52)
Leading disposals: Dyson Heppell (27), Lachie Whitfield (27), Isaac Cumming (19), Jacob Hopper (19), Harry Perryman (19), Jordan Ridley (19), Tim Taranto (19)
Team stats (Bombers-Giants): Disposals 262-296, inside-50s 30-35, hitouts 26-12, clearances 22-22, uncontested possessions 170-202, turnovers 42-40, marks 72-112, inside-50 marks 10-9, contested marks 7-14, tackles 31-30.
Jesse Hogan kicked a big goal after the 3QT siren to give the Giants their fourth unanswered major of the third term. They dominated the territory battle which started at the centre clearances, and booted 4.4 to the Bombers’ 0.4. They look the better side at the moment. Himmelberg and Hogan are more dangerous up forward, while the Giants are getting great rebound from their defenders. Lachie Whitfield is leading those rebounds. For the Bombers to bounce back, Darcy Parish, Zac Merrett, Jake Stringer and Dylan Shiel have to lift in this final term.
The Bombers are really looking to go a bit more defensive here and stop this run of momentum for the Giants.
The visitors are chipping the ball around with Essendon’s entire 18 in their back half to stry and slow down the Giants’ ball movement, and with that, they win the ball back in defence and begin their transition.
Inside-50s were 21-22 at half-time, they’re now 29-30. The Giants have kicked 2.2 from their eight inside-50s, the Bombers have managed just two behinds from their eight.
Bombers 6.7 (43), Giants 6.8 (44)
